The outbreak of cassava mosaic disease (CMD) poses a threat to Cambodia’s cassava sector, with its potential reduce yields by up to 80 per cent. CAVAC, in collaboration with International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and development agencies, is supporting the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), to respond.
Over the past decade cassava has become the second main crop in Cambodia, after rice. This is the result of a rapid expansion in the area devoted to its production – currently more than half a million hectares of national agricultural land. Cassava also has potential as an industrial crop helping to boost the incomes of smallholder farmers.
